Bradford Bulls produced a very clinical performance to comprehensively defeat Warrington Wolves in the Under 19s Academy on Saturday afternoon at Wilderspool Stadium.
The Bulls turned on the style with a polished attacking eight-try display that the under par Wolves side were unable to cope with and they deservedly went away with two very well earned league points.
The Wolves opened the scoring in the eleventh minute. They forced a second drop out in quick succession and following two strong drives from prop forwards Micky Learmonth and Gavin Bennion the ball reached stand off Will Milner. Milner slipped the ball to centre Will Fairhurst who squeezed over in the left corner. Full back Scott Turner converted from the touchline but the Bulls hit back five minutes later when full back Curtis Halliday made a break down the middle and he broke through some weak tackling before racing sixty metres to score on the right. Scrum half Adam Brook added the conversion to level the scores.
The Bulls hit the front midway through the half when a penalty put them deep into the Wolves half and prop forward Stephen Copeland powered over from close range; Brook goaled. Then right on the stroke of half time the Bulls got a scrum on the Wolves ten metre line and straight from it Brook chipped ahead and Naughton was alert enough to collect and score on the right. Brook's conversion gave his side an 18-6 interval advantage.
Bradford increased their lead five minutes into the second half when a short ball from substitute Danny Gregory found second row Alex Mellor and he forced his way over on the left from close range despite having three men on his back. Brook converted but then four minutes later Wolves loose forward Andy Ackers was held just short and a quick play the ball saw substitute Daniel Hirst find second row Joe Philbin at speed to score on the left. Turner added the conversion.
The Bulls regained the ball straight from the restart and some weak tackling gave space for substitute Emmerson Whittle to exploit and he scored on the left. Three minutes later a great break by centre Jarrod Ward saw him bounce off three defenders before finding Brook in support to score under the posts. Brook added the extras to both tries.
Bradford had centre Brad Adams sin binned just before the hour but the Wolves were unable to take advantage of the extra man and it was the Bulls who scored again when a long ball from the impressive Brook cut out two defenders and found winger Todd Binns in space to score wide out on the right; Brook converted. Four minutes later a clever kick on the last tackle by Brook saw stand off Sam Wood react quickest to touchdown under the posts. Brook made it eight out of eight with his successful conversion.
A minute from time Naughton landed a drop goal for the Bulls to complete the scoring and right on time Wolves substitute Joe Collins was sent off for a high tackle as the Bulls finished 49-12 victors.
After the game Wolves u19s head coach Danny Fullerton said: "We absorbed plenty of pressure in the first half and for the most part we defended well but little lapses allowed Bradford to profit from our errors to get ahead. The second half display was totally unacceptable. Ill-discipline meant that we were constantly on the back foot and the Bulls, to their credit, took full advantage. There will be a hard week ahead in training to ensure that there is no repeat of this in the future as the standards we have set as a club are much higher than what we have witnessed today.
"Will Fairhurst returned to the side today after missing out on selection for the past two matches and acquitted himself very well. Will Milner tried hard for the full eighty minutes but had very little support. We do not become a bad team after one below par performance and we will be doing our utmost to put things right next Saturday when we travel to Huddersfield Giants, kick off 2.00pm at Huddersfield YMCA RUFC."
