Warrington Wolves produced a very gritty performance to earn a very hard fought victory over Huddersfield Giants in the Under 19s Academy Elimination Play Off at Wilderspool Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves had to repel a very good Giants outfit who contributed greatly to make this an excellent spectacle for the large crowd but the second half showing from the Wolves ensured that they progressed through to the next round.
Early pressure by the Giants saw them take a deserved tenth minute lead when a couple of repeat sets on the Wolves line reaped dividends as hooker Canaan Smithies burrowed over from dummy half. Full back Jared Simpson converted but then thirteen minutes later the Wolves hit back as a penalty on the Giants line enabled hooker Andy Ackers and scrum half Joe Philbin combine to send second row Joe Philbin over on the left. Winger Scott Turner added the conversion.
Two minutes before the break the Wolves took the lead when a lovely chip to into the in-goal area on the last tackle by Patton saw full back James Saltonstall win the race to superbly touchdown at the side of the posts. Turner converted to give his side a 12-6 half time advantage.
Five minutes into the second half a long ball from Giants scrum half Sam Candlin hit the deck but winger Elliott Gorman picked up superbly and managed to squeeze over in the right corner but then thirteen minutes later a high kick to the corner on the last tackle by Patton saw Turner leap like a salmon to brilliantly outjump his opposite number to catch the ball and score wide out on the right. He converted himself to make the score 18-10 in the Wolves favour.
The Wolves moved further clear on sixty seven minutes when prop forward Tom Walker made a good run down the middle and a quick play the ball saw Ackers find substitute Sam Wilde and he broke clear and stepped round the full back to score his first try for the club at the side of the posts. Turner converted and then five minutes later after Patton was held just short Ackers went on his own from dummy half to score on the right. Turner again added the conversion.
Two minutes from time good play down the right by the Wolves saw the ball reach centre Will Milner and he slipped a lovely pass out of the back door to Turner who scored in the corner to make the final score 34-10 to the Wolves.
After the game Wolves Under 19s Assistant Coach Peter Nicholson said, "That was a very pleasing all-round team performance, especially in the second half. We put ourselves under pressure at times in the first half but defensively we were excellent and really kept our structure as the Giants tested us for long periods. We spoke at half time about the areas that we needed to improve on and the lads went out there and did the business; we were far more composed after the break and created lots of problems for Huddersfield. Declan Patton's kicking game really came to the fore in that second period and that kept the Giants on the back foot and allowed us to take advantage and score some top quality tries. Andy Ackers and Ryan Maneely shared the hooking duties and both gave excellent displays and credit must go to our forwards who really stood up well against a big physical Huddersfield pack; Gavin Bennion put in a great stint in the front row and Scott Turner continued his great run of form with another fine showing on the wing. Huddersfield showed why they have been one of the form teams over the past couple of months with a very spirited performance that they can be rightly proud of but we proved that we are a tough nut to crack and deservedly got the win"
Warrington now travel to St Helens in the Elimination Semi Final which will take place next weekend (day and kick off time to be confirmed).
