Wolves Make 9s Finals
WARRINGTON WOLVES RL 9s - TUESDAY 28th JUNE 2011
By Dave Whalley
Warrington Wolves travelled to The Recreation Ground, Whitehaven for night four of the Rugby League 9s where they came up against Salford City Reds, Wigan Warriors and Cumbria on a very enjoyable evening's entertainment.
The Wolves first game of the evening saw them take on Salford City Reds in an end-to-end encounter that could have gone either way but it was the Reds who came out on top winning 27-21. Try scorers for the Wolves were Paul Brearley (1), Bobbie Goulding (1), Brooke Broughton (1), Nathan Hill (1) and Ryan Shaw 1 (power play). Shaw added 1 goal.
The second game saw them face a very strong Wigan Warriors side that included Gareth Hock, Darrell Goulding and Liam Farrell and even though the young Wolves side gave a good account of themselves the Warriors proved to be too strong and they ran out winners 25-7. Brooke Broughton (1) and James Mendeika 1 (power play) were the Wolves try scorers.
The final game of the evening saw the Wolves take on Cumbria and this proved to be their best performance of the evening. Some excellent handling skills saw the Wolves dominate throughout t run out winners 26-12 and ensure that they finished second in the West Region table to qualify for the final's night at Headingley Carnegie next Tuesday evening. The Wolves try scorers were Keith Holden (1), Nathan Hill (1), James Saltonstall (1), James Mendeika (1), and Ben Currie (1). Keith Holden (1) and Bobbie Goulding (2) added the conversions.
Wolves Under 20s Assistant Coach Danny Fullerton said: "I think we didn't start too well against Salford; our execution of skills let us down and Salford showed more enthusiasm than us and deserved the win. We then faced a very strong Wigan side and the young Wolves squad really stood up and got stuck into the experienced side with some hard tackles and go forward but again we didn't really take our chances through wrong decision making when we had good field position. By far the most pleasing performance of the night was against the Cumbria side. The players really pulled together and showed their fighting spirit with a very solid performance that showed off some sharp skills at speed which was too much for Cumbria. It was a long journey but to finish the evening with such a positive result means that we can look forward to the Finals night next week. As always it was a squad effort but special mention must go to James Saltonstall, Ben Currie, Scott Turner, Ryan Shaw and Glenn Riley. I would also like to add a big thank you to all the staff for all their hard effort over the past four weeks."
