Warrington Wolves Tackle Australia With Emirates
Warrington Wolves players and management will depart from Manchester Airport this evening for their pre-season warm up tour to Australia onboard Emirates Airline, which is sponsoring the Super League club's 23-day tour.
Several members of the Wolves playing squad, including captain Adrian Morley, were at the airport early to get up close and personal with the Emirates A380 ‘superjumbo' and meet with pilot Roman Janus, who himself hails from Australia. Emirates is the world's biggest customer for the A380 with 20 of the double-decker aircraft currently in its fleet, and a further 70 on order.
Emirates, which operates three daily flights from Manchester to Dubai and beyond, including four Australian cities, is flying the Wolves squad to Sydney, where their 23-day tour will culminate in a much anticipated clash against Russell Crowe-owned South Sydney Rabbitohs on 28th January.
Speaking ahead of the team's departure, Wolves captain and former Great Britain international Adrian Morley, who enjoyed a 6 year stint in the NRL with the Sydney Roosters said: "An English Super League club taking its team on a pre-season tour ‘down under' is an exciting prospect and the next few weeks will be vital preparation for next season. Emirates have been hugely supportive of this tour and we hope some of our fans have been able to make the journey down under as well."
Former Australian international Trent Waterhouse, who signed for Wolves in the summer of 2011, also spoke with excitement about returning to his native Sydney: "I can't wait to be back in Australia and working hard on a competitive pre-season tour. It's a very long trip to Sydney so it's great to be heading down with Emirates who I know will fly us there in comfort and set us up for a successful few weeks."
Emirates has been involved with a wide array of premier sporting events and teams from around the world for over 20 years and its sponsorship portfolio now includes partnerships with FIFA, Arsenal, IRB Referees and the Melbourne Cup Festival.
Emirates' sponsorship of Warrington Wolves' pre-season tour highlights a commitment to all forms of rugby and builds on its existing heritage with the RFL.
Speaking of the sponsorship, Laurie Berryman, Emirates' Vice President UK & Ireland has this to say: "Emirates has been a strong supporter of the Warrington Wolves for a number of years now and we are delighted to welcome the team and their fans onboard our flights from Manchester to Australia. We see sport as an important way to connect people across the globe and are proud of our involvement with Rugby League. We wish the Wolves squad all the best with their pre-season tour in Australia and hope they return triumphant."
Andy Gatcliffe, CEO Warrington Wolves, added: "I would like to personally thank Sir Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman, Emirates Airline & Group, and also Laurie Berryman for the customer care and expertise provided by Emirates personnel for this extremely important pre-season tour for the club."
Emirates is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and in 2010, introduced their A380 on one of its three daily services from Manchester - the first time the superjumbo has operated from a regional airport. From Dubai, passengers can connect to a choice of 70 flights a week to four Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
