Smith On Opening Win
Warrington Wolves secured a home win in their opening game of the new Super League campaign and coach Tony Smith was pleased with the overall performance.
He said: "We were probably a bit scrappy with the ball at times. I thought our defence was pretty good for a fair amount of the game but with the amount of penalties in the match and also the amount of ball turned over you are going to concede a few points.
"I thought Cas had a real dig considering the score line was so heavily against them so early on. They never gave in and we never expected them to either. It was a good work out for us. We've got a bit to work on but we expected that from the first game of the year and our second match within a week, we are going to be a bit rusty which I think most teams are in the competition from what I've seen so far this weekend.
"We probably overplayed a little bit but that's natural, you can only build that sort of discipline as the season they played as well.
"There was some experimentation with positions and some roles that were played today. Waterhouse played prop for a fair amount of his stint which he hasn't done a lot of since he's been here. We're looking at a few goes on. That's why we have so many rounds you hopefully get better as the season progresses. Round 1 you're going to be a bit off but we did alright against a team that's got some particularly good attacking ability. They ask a lot of questions of teams and will ask plenty of questions this year. I'd like to give credit to the way things and combinations as a ‘just in case' sometimes."
