Slam Dunk For The Wolves!
Warrington Wolves swapped their rugby shirts for basketball vests as they took on their hoop-throwing counterparts in a charity game on Sunday.
Wolves Foundation basketball coach Delme Herriman praised the impact of the new relationship forged with the rugby team following a charity match at the weekend.
Herriman saw his own idea come to fruition at Birchwood Tennis and Leisure Complex on Sunday, as several of Warrington's Super League stars took on his basketball outfit in a match to raise money for the charity After Adoption.
The likes of David Solomona, Chris Riley, Paul Wood, Matty Blythe, Stefan Ratchford, Chris Hill and Kevin Penny lined up to put on a show in front of a healthy crowd, and Herriman hopes it's the start of a fruitful relationship between the two outfits.
He said: "It was a fantastic event. I had an idea to get the rugby lads down and have a charity game, and they jumped on it. They were so open to the idea, and it was fantastic that they all showed up to help raise money for After Adoption.
David Solomona caught the eye with some trademark ball-handling skills but with a different shape ball to help the rugby lads take the game to the wire, before losing out 101-100 - although they did start with a 40-0 advantage.
And after taking on the Wolves at their own game, Herriman hasn't ruled out a reverse fixture, with his basketball stars trying their hand at rugby.
He added: "I grew up in Widnes, so I've already played quite a bit, but sure, we wouldn't mind giving the rugby a go. It's something we could do, definitely."
The basketball side, which plays in the third division of the English Basketball League, is operated through the Warrington Wolves Foundation, the charitable arm of the rugby league club.
