Former Warrington player and now Manly area coach Phil Blake last night told of his relief that doctors discovered a potentially life-threatening blood clot in his lungs before it was too late.
Blake was yesterday recovering with his family at his Curl Curl home, a much happier and relaxed scene to what he experienced last Thursday.
The 43-year-old, complaining of chest pains and loss of breathe, was rushed to Manly hospital after a CAT scan revealed the dangerous clots in his lungs.
Doctors immediately put the Manly boss on medication to break down the clot and ease the build-up of blood in his lungs.
"The worst thing was I didn't know what was going on," Blake said yesterday.
"It was pretty concerning when I found out exactly what was wrong and I had a build up in my lungs. With blood clots if it travels to the wrong place you're in a fair bit of trouble. I'm just relieved that it was found and we were able to treat it promptly."
The former Sea Eagles and 'Wire' back originally went for treatment a week before the blood clots were discovered with what he thought was just a 48-hour virus.
"I was given painkillers but then a few days later I had this pain under my right armpit so I went back," Blake explained.
"They gave me more anti-biotics and that didn't help so I went and saw my GP.
"He originally thought I had pneumonia, so it was then I had a CAT scan and realised it was something more serious."
Blake is currently required to have blood tests every two days until doctors can find what caused the clots. He is also visited by a nurse at his home twice a day to administer injections and blood-thinning medication to help in his recovery. "It might take me 3-6 months to fully heal," he said.
"The concerning thing is even the people at the hospital couldn't understand why this happened. I keep myself fit, I train most days and have a balanced diet."
Amazingly, Blake said he will try to be on the sidelines for Manly's round 13 Tooheys New Shute Shield clash on Saturday. Blake starred for Warrington in 1986.
