Celebrate Samoan Independence Day in style
Flash mobs, beach parties and more will be touching down in Warrington as the town celebrates Samoan Independence Day this weekend.
As host town for the Samoan team during Rugby League World Cup 2013, Warrington will be celebrating in South Pacific style this Saturday, 1 June, with a whole range of exciting events for all ages.
In 1962 Samoa became the first South Pacific Island to gain independence and this is celebrated each year. 2013 marks 51 years since Samoa gained independence from New Zealand. The country has a day of events planned from raising the flag at 7am to cultural entertainment in the evening. Warrington will be celebrating too and there's lots to get involved with so don't miss out!
The Golden Square will come alive from 11am until 4pm, with everything from children's face painting to visits from local celebrities as Wolves players Tyrone McCarthy, Rhys Evans and James Laithwaite * drop in to see the Rugby League World Cup trophy on display.
A flashmob dance will be popping up at various locations in the town centre with dancers from the Window on Warrington - a large scale dance project which will be performed on the days of Rugby League World Cup matches - taking part. The movement of the flashmob will be inspired by Samoan and Warrington heritage and culture.
Ian Cox, Golden Square Shopping Centre general manager, said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming the Rugby League World Cup to Golden Square not only on a day that celebrates the fantastic Samoan spirit but also at the start of an exciting programme of events leading up to the biggest date in the rugby calendar. We are encouraging rugby fans and shoppers alike to be there to show their support."
The evening entertainment will be hosted at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub when between 5pm and 8pm LiveWire will be holding a Samoan beach party. This fantastic family event catering for all ages will include: a beach party in the pool with inflatables and disco; beach volleyball lessons and competition; photo opportunties with the RLWC trophy; taster sessions of touch rugby plus more.
Tickets for the evening event are priced at £10 for a family of four. To book this event please contact 01925 624997 or email@example.com
Jan Souness, chair of the local RLWC2013 group, said: "We hope everyone gets involved with the brilliant activities taking place and celebrates Samoan Independence Day with us. As the tournament gets closer we want the whole town to pledge their support to Samoa and we want people to come from far and wide to mark this day with us."
