Briers: Need to focus again
Half-back Lee Briers signed a new deal last week so WolvesTV caught up with the club veteran to discuss last week's cup defeat, this Sunday's trip to Castleford and the memorable cricket expertise on show earlier this week.
On last Sunday's game Lee said: "It was disappointing for everybody concerned but it happens in life sometimes; it happens in sport. It goes wrong sometimes and it did that day. Unfortunately it was in a big game, in a semi final, and it hurt but life goes on.
"Obviously you are down, it hurts and your pride is dented as you've been knocked out of the semi final and you are not going to Wembley but if we sulk and mope about it then it's not going to help our chances of hopefully reaching the Grand Final of this year's Super League. We need to focus again on this week against Castleford. The good thing in sport is that you get a chance a week later to get redemption. Hopefully we can focus on ourselves and put a good performance in."
The Wolves will travel to Castleford this Sunday afternoon as they return to Super League action and Lee is expecting a difficult contest.
"It's a traditional old ground and Castleford do play well at home. The crowd's on top of you, it's a great family club and it's going to be tough for us because they've found some form lately.
"They've changed coach in the meantime (since last played them). They've got a bit of mental toughness now. Even though they've not won every game under Daryl Powell they are certainly fighting to the end. Not long back they went to Huddersfield and were getting beaten 30-0, I think, and then nearly came back to win so they are fighting to the end. We will need to put a performance in for the full 80 minutes. They've got some quality players."
And the stars of this week's opposition?
"Obviously you've got Rangi Chase who lights up Super League; he's a fantastic player. Daryl Clark the hooker's really sharp at dummy half and one we need to watch. They've got some good forwards too Craig Huby, Keith Mason so we will need to be on our game."
To finish we talked about the squad facing the challenge of a different sport earlier this week in the form of a charity cricket match.
"It was a fantastic day for Bennie Westwood and for Grappenhall Cricket Club. The whole occasion was organised superbly; it was one of the best events I've been to organisational wise. It was fantastic and it was good for us to get a win; I think Grappenhall took it easy on us!
"They (the legends) were all accessible and came over and chatted to us. House (Waterhouse) and Joel were talking to the Aussie guys; all the way back from when they played in Sydney they knew a few of our guys. I think House was a bit star struck!"
