Academy duo join life in the First Team
Warrington Wolves Academy pair Joe Philbin and Tom Walker will join the first team training squad ahead of the forthcoming 2014 season.
The pair have proven themselves this year within the Under 19s Academy set-up earning their promotion.
Local second rower Joe played his junior rugby at Culcheth Eagles and Latchford Albion and has progressed through the Wolves ranks over the past few years.
He made the step up to the Under 19s this year having excelled in the Under 18s for the previous two seasons and he really did make a massive impact. He was the only member of the squad who played in every one of the 28 games and in many of those he played for the full eighty minutes which is a great effort for a back rower. He was also joint third top try scorer with a very impressive 18 tries.
Prop forward Tom is a proud Cumbrian and came through the junior ranks at Cockermouth Titans and also had a spell at Workington Town prior to joining the Wolves. He has represented England at Under 18s level for the past two seasons and has earned rave reviews in the International games that he has played.
He certainly added some ‘bite' to the Under 19s side this season making a massive contribution in the 20 games he played in, chipping in with five tries.
Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: "It's keeping in line with what we've done here for a long time now bringing the young players through to help develop them for their future. I'm really excited about both these boys; they've had a tremendous season and we are looking forward to working with them on a full-time basis. You've got to be pretty special to get the call-up; they've got that and I'm sure we'll see them in the Warrington first team in years to come."
Under 19s head coach Danny Fullerton added: " Joe and Tom have both been a pleasure to coach and it's been great to see them both develop into really good people and players throughout the year. Both have been consistent performers in the Wolves u19s and fully deserve their opportunity in a full-time environment where - if they continue to make the right choices in life, keep their feet on the ground and are prepared to work even harder - they will certainly excel in their careers with the experience and quality of people they will have supporting them. Joe and Tom are both uncompromising forwards who like to play the game tough and never take a backwards step as well as being exceptionally skilful with the ball in hand."
