Hall of Fame - Tommy Thompson : 1927-1934

Tommy 'Tubby' Thompson was signed from New Springs, an amateur team in the Wigan area, in May 1927.

He made his debut, on 1 October 1927, as a 5ft 8in, 12st 6lbs centre, at Belle Vue, Wakefield in a comprehensive 7-39 defeat, before moving out onto the left wing.

He possessed a wonderful side-step that could take him past most opponents, near to the line, almost certainly guaranteed a try. He was certainly given plenty of opportunities having a world class centre like Billy Dingsdale inside him. The 21s December 1929 was a red letter day for Thompson as he almost single handily beat the touring Australians, scoring ALL 17 points with three tries and four goals 17-8 victory before 12,826 disbelieving fans.

Season 1930-31 then saw Tommy equal the Warrington tries in a season record, with twenty eight. It was on the 6th April 1933 that he set a new Warrington record with six tries on the wing in a match against Bradford Northern, despite being carried off hurt. Thompson won an England cap as well as being a member of two winning Lancashire Cup sides, in 1929 against Salford, and 1932, when he scored a decisive try to beat St.Helens.

Unfortunately at Wembley in 1933 he had to be content with a Challenge Cup runners-up medal, against Huddersfield. His final season at Wilderspool saw him joint top try scorer, his last match being a home defeat to neighbours Widnes 3-10, on 30 March 1934, before moving on to play for Oldham, scoring a try on his debut in a 7-7 draw against'Warrington! He was transferred later to Leigh.Tommy Thompson made 202 appearances for Warrington, scoring 112 tries and kicking 14 goals for a total of 364 points.
