Hall of Fame - Billy Dingsdale : 1928-1940

Billy DingsdaleBilly Dingsdale signed for the club from Broughton Rangers in September 1928 for £600, getting himself £100 in four instalments!

He made a try scoring debut at Wilderspool on 15 September 1928, in an easy 41-2 win over Hunslet, and went on to equal the club record for tries in that season, with 28. Twice in January 1929 he hit Bradford Northern for four tries in a game, as an attacking centre he simply oozed class.

Standing 5ft 11in tall and a playing weight of 12st 4lbs Dingsdale was an expert at creating openings for his winger. He could also beat an opponent with a skill not seen today, by racing up to a player at top speed then chipping the ball over his head with the outside of the boot, accelerating round him, and catching the ball before it landed.

He went onto form a deadly centre partnership with Australian, Billy Shankland and had the honour of scoring Warrington's first ever points at Wembley, with a try in the 30th minute against Huddersfield, in a classic encounter in 1933. Bill also scored Warrington's only try in the Championship final defeat in 1935. He had however collected Lancashire Cup winners medals in 1929 and 1932 respectively.

His displays earned him three Tests for Great Britain against Australia, and selection for the 1932 Tour, where unfortunately injury restricted his games. He also earned 7 England caps, as well as representing Lancashire on 14 occasions.

The war effectively ended Dingsdale's career at Warrington. He made 373 appearances, scored 154 tries and kicked 4 goals for a total of 470 points.
